Winter running and weather

When I went out for my run today I thought of a couple of other bits of crummy weather in which I have run.

Possibly the worst was a 5km run in Ottawa in February 1991.  It was snowing and the wind chill was something like -35oC.  I was wearing:
  • Above the clavicles: head band; baseball cap; toque; and neck warmer;
  • Waist to neck: short-sleeved tee; long sleeved tee; fleece jacket; rain jacket;
  • Below the waist: jockettes; thermals; shorts; gore-tex rain pants; two pairs of socks; shoes.
  • Gloves; ski mitts.
I got home and had a cup of coffee and a hot shower.  Then looked in the mirror and I still had lumps of ice in my beard from breath condensation.

A competitor was a day in March 2006 in New York.  It was a Sunday and my practice was to go for a 12km run from our apartment round the Reservoir in Central Park.
  • I can't remember what the temperature was - probably about -5oC - but it was snowing heavily.  The wind didn't seem too bad until I got up to 5th Avenue, where I realised how the spine of Manhattan sheltered Turtle Bay.  
  • I wasn't wearing as much as in Ottawa and had my spray jacket in a bum bag.  At about 56th St. I pulled into a doorway and "adjusted my clothing".  Probably the only time I have thought well of the Trump Tower!  
  • As I got to the Reservoir there was a loud clap of thunder and I decided I wasn't going to tun on the exposed track up there.  
  • I do recall the guys in the bagel shop looked at me as though I was nuts when I called in to pick up breakfast on the way home.
At 10am today it wasn't as cold as yesterday but I still had three long sleeved layers on the top and a pair of thermals.  Also gloves.  The wind was foul but it was nicely clear as shown in this image from near Captains Flat Rd.

 .. but this is what they are predicted to look like tomorrow morning.
At 1320 on 6 August the first lot of precipitation that might cause this is near Tumbarumba (in a straight line about 150km SW of Carwoola).  That might be going a bit South.  A second line of rain on the radar is closer to 400km West (near Deniliquin).

2 hours later the first front was near Cabramurra - about 50km closer to Carwoola (where the sky was getting much cloudier).  According to the Meteye BoM automatic forecast it is already raining here - and overlaying the radar does show a couple of showers here and there in the neighbourhood.

The system seems to have sped up!  After another 2 hours the front of the front is at Michelago, a mere 40kms away!

We ended up with much less rain than forecast (the front seemed to split up into little showers with random impact).  It was also quite warm (minimum  +4oC) so no snow - just a howling gale.

A friend from my time in the UN sent me some photos of her family trip along Route 66.  They did this is a large camperwagon rather than a Chevy Corvette (apparently the kids jacked up about being offered a trip in the trunk).  It seems to have been a very good trip for them and most interesting to see their photos.  It was also educational for me, as I found out the German for rocking chair (schaukelstuhl, since you ask). They did 7200 miles in 30 days - a pretty serious bit of distance. This made me think of the trips we did in 1981 when living in Denver.  Frances initiated that idea by getting a book about the National Parks of the West  and marking interesting places.  I then worked out a route on a Rand-McNally Road Atlas (GPS was unknown then  - as were iPhones, personal computers and the internet).  From memory, taking nearly the whole Summer school holidays we covered about 10,000 miles in 70 days.  Here, approximately,  are our routes: That map comes from Google Maps (G

Insects from pine trees

This afternoon (13/1/2015) we were looking out of our sunroom and noticed a strange bit of mist.  On getting my binoculars on the case I found it to be a cloud of tens of thousand of insects.  They appeared with naked eye to be flying away, but with binoculars I thought they were circling. Here are some images In the second one it may be possible to see there are two streams coming from the top of each tree. There was a loud buzzing noise but that could just be several thousand wings. Earlier in the day Frances had been to some nearby willows and they were infested with many little black soft bodied insects.  Perhaps they shifted to the pines and were swarming? Help!! Any information welcome. A colleague, from Wamboin, had noticed a similat phenomenon, but involvng eucalypts rather than pines!  Here are the photos he took with his phone. Satin Bowerbird gets ready for Lanigans Ball.

Having some time to spare today I went to check the bower near "Tom Green's Seat" in the Australian National Botanic Gardens.  The bower was well occupied by what I take to be - based on the green plumage and yellow bill - a 5th or 6th year male Satin Bowerbird.  (With all these images, click on them for a bigger - unfortunately not better focused picture.  The shots were taken hand held on full zoom from about 10m distance into a fairly well shaded location.) He was very much engaged in adding to the construction. Then it seemed that another bird called from the bush above.  This led to a whole lot of activity: the most spectacular (and worst imaged) was a flash of the wings: The bird also did a fair bit of hopping around.  Given that it was still immature I called to mind the greatest traditional Irish song of all time: Diarmuid O'Leary and the Bards performing Lanigan's Ball .  This ditty refers to spending "6 long months at Brooks Academy learning
